When hiring a new cook, Glen Ridge Country Club executive chef James Haberstroh sometimes tests prospects by giving them a few ingredients to work with and seeing what they can create on short notice. While attending the recent Chef to Chef Conference presented by Club & Resort Business magazine in Seattle, Haberstroh was on the other side of the challenge: He was one of four contestants in a mystery basket competition.

For an increasingly busy food operation, Glen Ridge (N.J.) Country Club needed a kitchen that could keep up with incoming orders. This past February, the club unveiled a new a la carte kitchen, as part of a $13 million, property-wide renovation, that put an end to a logistical challenge that had been plaguing its food-and-beverage team for quite some time.

Born out of necessity, the club’s kitchen was needed to provide better service in “1894,” Glen Ridge’s brand-new, 210-seat restaurant.

In addition to that honor, the GRCC’s pro, Tommy Monteverdi, has received the NJPGA’s Horton Smith Award, which is bestowed on a New Jersey PGA golf professional who contributes to golf education for area golf professionals.

The Met Area is in the heart of winter, yet for more and more local clubs that doesn’t mean golf is out of season thanks to indoor facilities and golf simulators.

The third phase of construction, the Pool House renovation and state of the art fitness center addition will be completed by summer 2017. The project is the work of Donnelly Construction of Wayne, which has renovated clubhouses at Baltusrol, Canoe Brook, Essex County, North Jersey, Fiddler’s Elbow, Winged Foot and many others. Interior design is the handiwork of Judd Brown Associates of Rhode Island.

Anybody can mix up some ground beef, beans and pre-fab mix into a serviceable chili. Glen Ridge's version incorporates bits of primesteak cuts and simmers for more than 24 hours. Order it on its own, or it'll make you want to lick it off the top and trow away the underlying hot dog.
